The NFL free agent period officially began on March 13, but several deals had already been announced by reporters. On March 11, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network confirmed that the 49ers had signed 24-year-old linebacker Kwon Alexander to a four-year, $54 million contract. As a result, Alexander, who played only six games last season, will make more per season ($13.5 million) than Luke Kuechly ($12.4 million), who is widely viewed as one of the league's best linebackers.
Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Alexander has 380 tackles, seven quarterback sacks, and six forced fumbles through 46 career regular-season games. He led the league in solo tackles (108) in 2016 and played in his first Pro Bowl in 2017. He is expected to start alongside second-year linebacker Fred Warner in 2019.
